Ani_Jam is a project by Pixel Blue College, Western Canada’s only Toon Boom Authorized Training Centre

Once upon a time at Pixel Blue College…

Ani_Jam started in 2024 as a way to challenge our 2D Animation and Illustration Students. Inspired by the video game jam format and the 24 Hours Animation Contest for Students, we gathered our students and alumni team up to create 60 second long animated films over 3 short days in the spring. What was created in that time were films that had potential to be refined and expanded upon for submission to festivals across Canada and around the world.

The results of the first Jam were well beyond what we could have expected, and the enthusiasm that the students had for the event was palpable. We knew this had to become an annual event, and eventually expand this challenge beyond the school walls to highlight all of the animation talent in Alberta.

In the spring of 2025, we hosted AniJamV02 and took advantage of one more year running the jam internally at Pixel Blue College to polish our processes and to build upon what we created in the first iteration. With the support of Toon Boom, Wacom, and The Edmonton Screen Industries Office, AniJam proved to be a valuable piece of the puzzle that was missing in Edmonton’s film-making scene. After a successful Showcase event in front of a packed crowd, we knew that Ani_Jam was ready to go province wide.

This year’s AniJamV03 we are so excited to invite students and animation professionals alike across all of Alberta to participate in this exciting animation challenge. Our hope is to share the stories, and world class talents of this community of animation underdogs. Animation deserves a bigger spotlight in Alberta, so we created Ani_Jam.

FAQs

How do I connect to other Jammers?

If you’re looking for AniJam teammates, or just to do some good ol’ fashioned networking. Pop on over to the Ani_Jam Discord. Chat with other Jammers, ask questions, share your work in this active community!

Does it cost anything to participate?

No, we jam for free!

Who is eligible to register?

Anyone living in Alberta can participate: emerging artists, students, or established pros, all are invited to join this unique animation challenge. All of your team members must live in Alberta or have graduated from an Alberta Post Secondary within 2 years of the Jam Event.

Does Ani_Jam or Pixel Blue College provide animation software for use during the jam?

Possibly, send us an email to inquire about your options. Or have a look at the various free or cheap software options well prior to the jam so that you can get comfortable with the tools!

Can I participate online?

Yes! Teams can work and organize themselves however they would like during the jam!

Can I participate in person?

We are working to partner with a few organizations across the province that are willing to host teams from 9:00AM - 6:00PM on jam days. Jammers are expected to find a venue on their own.

Can I use Generative AI to assist in making my short film?

No, we’re interested in celebrating, rewarding, and preserving the integrity of the artistic craft of animation. Animators can use tools and technology that allow for the honest creative expression that serves to connect with their trusting audience. We strive to push artists to exercise and challenge their creative abilities, ensuring that generative AI will always be left struggling to chase the unmatchable quality of the real thing.

Can my instructors or mentors help my team with our films?

Only team members can contribute to the films (aside from voice actors). However, you can seek out technical support from outside of your team.

When will the mystery theme be announced?

The theme is announced during our kick off live stream event in the morning of our first day of the jam.

Can my team work more than the recommended maximum of 12 hours a day?

Yes, but should you?! Come up with a schedule that works for you and your team, and remember to get some sleep! Great Ani_Jam films have been made in under 36 hours over three days!

How does the judging process work?

The judging panel is made up of a wide range of creative professionals external from Pixel Blue College. They receive each film submission along with a form where they mark their scores on the following categories: “concept, creativity, and originality” (5 points), “story, pacing, and clarity” (5 points), “art direction and visual appeal” (5 points), and “overall impact” (10 points). All of the judges scores for each film are then added together to get the ranked totals.
